What does it look like to have faith like a child?
“He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. 5And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.
Matthew 18:2-5
I usually wake up before my children, and they aren’t allowed out of their rooms until about 6:00. Sometimes my oldest will come out, and the deal is that they can come out, but it’s time to read the Bible. So they will go and get their Bible and read it beside me. It’s my favourite time, and even though I say “it's quite time to read” I actually enjoy the questions that come with the Bible stories that they are going through. We are called to disciple our kids and bring them to understanding, but I often wonder how much our kids teach us about faith.
The way that my children react to the Bible is with absolute trust. They read a story and they completely believe not only that God can do it, but that He did. When God says we need to trust Him, my kids do because they have no reason not to. They aren’t hurt by other people not being trustworthy. I wish I could say they haven’t been let down by God and that's my excuse, but when I look back I can’t think of a time I was let down by God either. I don’t trust other people and therefore I put that on God as well. If we only had the faith of a child, that when God says He loves us, and wants to be in relationship with Him, then we believe Him.
I also love playing make believe with my kids, whether it be eating the make believe food they make, or fighting off the enemy spiders that are coming. They love spending time with me, and ask more and more to spend time together. My wife walked away for a few minutes and my child said “I miss mommy so much.”
Maybe that's what it looks like to have faith like a child too. To want to spend more and more time with God. To be in His word, not of obligation but of excitement. To talk to Him easily and with joy rather than putting in our limited time and then moving in. Sometimes I think that instead of faith like a child, I have faith like a teenager. God knows I love Him, but I don’t show it, and people don’t see it either.
Lord I pray that I can have more faith like a child. Thank you for showing me, through my children, how much you love me and how I need to be more like my kids in both faith and love. Amen
